The Academy awards Gold Medals and Prizes in thirteen fields of Science and Technology to Pakistani scientists who have made original research contributions. Nominations for the award are made by the Fellows of the Academy, Universities and R&D Organizations. The nominations are evaluated by Expert Committees constituted by the Council of the Academy. So far, nearly 200 scientists have been given these awards.

About 60% of the Fellows have received prestigious civil awards, viz., Nishan-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam, Sitara-i-Khidmat, Pride of Performance, Tamgha-i-Pakistan, Tamgha-i-Imtiaz and Tamgha-i-Quaid-i-Azam from the President of Pakistan, for their contributions to the cause of science at the national and international levels.

PAKISTAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AWARDS/GOLD MEDALS

Each Award carries Rs. 15,000/- Cash, a Gold Medal and a Certificate in the fields of Biochemistry and Earth Sciences. The Academy invites nominations in January/February each year from its Fellows, Vice Chancellors of the Universities and Heads of the R&D Organizations. Only one name is to be proposed.

Only Pakistani scientists, other than Fellows of the Academy, will be eligible for the award of medals, and those who have not received any Medal/Prize from the Pakistan Academy of Sciences during the past five years.

Four copies each of Biodata and complete list of publications must accompany the nominations. A brief summary is needed highlighting the outstanding internationally acclaimed achievements in the field of scientific research, including the citations of the nominee’s research papers by other scientists, Gold Medals and other awards already received. Reprints or photocopies of the research papers published in scientific journals of international repute are also required.

The nominations, complete in all respects, received within due dates are processed. The documents of the candidates are sent to members of the relevant expert committees for assessment in order of merit. On the basis of the recommendations of the experts, the Council of the Academy selects the candidates for the award. The prize is awarded to the winners in the investiture ceremony in the General Body meeting in November/December.

PAS PRIZE FOR DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR
 

The Prize carries Rs. 300,000/- Cash, a Gold Medal and a Certificate. The Academy invites nominations in January/February each year from its and high-level institutions engaged in Scientific Education and Research, and recognized as such by the Academy.

Only Pakistani scientists of proven international standing with internationally acknowledged contribution to the progress of scientific research of benefit and relevance to Pakistan will be eligible for the prize. A person will be eligible to receive the prize only once in his/her lifetime.

Each nomination must be accompanied by five copies each of the following documents of the nominee:

  1. National Identity Card.
  2. Latest passport-size colour photograph.
  3. Biodata.
  4. A brief summary highlighting the outstanding internationally acclaimed achievements in the field of scientific research, including the citations of the nominee’s research papers by other scientists.
  5. Letters of support from three scientists recognized internationally (not related to the nominee).
  6. Reprints or photocopies of the research papers published in Scientific Journals of international repute.
  7. List of the internationally recognized Scientific Monographs and Science Books, including in respect of each, inter alia, the following:
         a)   Title of the Monograph/Book.
         b)   Particulars of the publisher/s.
         c)   Year of publication.
         d)   Contents of the Monograph/Book.

AWARD OF GOLD MEDALS BY PAKISTAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IN VARIOUS SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES

TWAS PRIZE FOR THE YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN THE SOUTH

The Prize carries US $ 2,000/- Cash and a Certificate. The Pakistan Academy of Sciences on behalf of Third World Academy of Sciences instituted a prize for Young Pakistani Scientists who are below the age of 40 (the age of the nominee should not exceed 40 on 1st January of the year in which the nominations are invited) in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics on rotation basis.

The Academy invites nominations in January/February each year from its Fellows, Vice Chancellors of the Universities and Heads of R&D Organizations. Only one name is to be proposed.

         (1)   A scientist who has already been awarded a Gold Medal / Prize by the Academy in a particular discipline shall be eligible for another Gold Medal/Prize in the same subject after a gap of five (5) years, subject to the conditions that the medal would not be given on the basis of same work. He shall have to submit research work carried out after the award of the first medal. This should be clearly mentioned/reflected in the nomination letter.

         (2)   Four (4) copies of complete biodata of the nominee, giving age, educational qualifications, service record, present address, along with a brief citation highlighting the achievements of the nominee are required.

         (3)   The nomination for the Prize must be supported by at least one reprint of each of the relevant original paper of the nominee. In case the reprints are not available, photocopies of reprints with complete reference to the Scientific Journals in which the original papers were published mentioning the titles, years of publication and number of pages of research papers should be provided.

         (4)   List of research papers as distinct from Books, Monographs, Reports, Notes, Popular and Semi-Popular Essays, Conference Proceedings may be provided.

The proposer is requested to verify that the above requirements are fulfilled, failing which the nomination will not be considered. The documents of the candidates are sent to the selection committee constituted for the purpose for assessment in order of merit. On the basis of the recommendations of the Selection Committee, the Council of the Academy selects candidates for the prize. DR. M. RAZIUDDIN SIDDIQI PRIZE FOR SCIENTISTS UNDER 40

The Prize carries Rs. 15,000/- Cash, a Gold Medal and a Certificate The Pakistan Academy of Sciences has instituted Dr. M. Raziuddin Siddiqi prize for scientists under 40, in the fields of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry on rotating basis. The Academy invites nominations in January/February each year from its Fellows, Vice Chancellors of the Universities and Heads of the R&D Organizations. Only one name is to be proposed.

The Prize carries Rs. 15,000/- Cash and a Certificate. The Pakistan Academy of Sciences has instituted Dr. M. N. Azam Prize in Computer Sciences (Software).

The Academy invites nominations in January/February each year from its Fellows, Vice Chancellors of the Universities and Heads of the R&D Organizations. Only one name is to be proposed.

Four copies of detailed biodata, list of publications, research projects, and list of software with details in terms of application is to be supplied. A summary/citation highlighting the achievements of the nominee is needed.

The nominations complete, in all respects, received within due dates are processed. The documents of the candidates are sent to an expert for assessment in order of merit. On the basis of the recommendations of the experts, the Council of the Academy selects candidate for the prize. The prize is awarded to the winner in the investiture ceremony in the General Body meeting in November/December.

PAS/COMSTECH PRIZE IN COMPUTER SCIENCES/ INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Prize carries Rs. 15,000/-, cash, a Gold Medal and a Certificate. The Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) has recently instituted PAS/COMSTECH Prize in Computer Sciences/Information Technology Pakistani Scientists, except Fellows of the Academy and those who have not received any Medal/Prize from the Academy during past five years are eligible for award.

Only one nominee may be proposed. Nominations can be made only by Fellows of the Academy and institutions engaged in scientific education and research. Nomination must be accompanied by four (4) copies each of the Biodata and complete list of research papers, a brief summary highlighting the outstanding achievements in the field of scientific research, gold medals and other awards already received and reprints or photocopies of the research papers published in scientific journals of international repute.

The nominations complete, in all respects, received within due dates are to be processed. The documents of the candidates will be sent to members of the relevant expert committee for assessment in order of merit.

Recommendations of the experts will be placed before the Council of the Academy for selection of the candidate for the Prize.

DR. ATTA-UR-RAHMAN PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY

The Pakistan Academy of Sciences has instituted Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman prize in Chemistry. The prize carries Rs.20,000/- Cash, a Gold Medal and a Certificate. Pakistani Scientists, except Fellows of the Academy and those who have not received any Medal/Prize from the Academy during past five years are eligible for the prize. The Academy invites nominations in Jan/Feb each year.

Only one nominee may be proposed. Nominations can be made only by Fellows of the Academy and Heads of institutions engaged in scientific education and research. Nominations must be accompanied by four (4) copies each of the Biodata and complete list of research papers, a brief summary highlighting outstanding achievements in the field of scientific research, gold medals and other awards already received and reprints or photocopies of the research papers published in scientific journals of international repute.
